A treatment room, not a conveyor belt

Facial waxing is the least glamorous thing Rai does and probably the reason a good number of people come through the door in the first place. It is booked in the same studio, with the same artist, and with the same amount of time set aside.

Rai uses Lycon wax, which is worked in smaller sections and lifts hair rather than dragging at the skin. It costs more per treatment than the cheap stuff and it is noticeably less unpleasant.

Because she works alone, nobody else is in the building. For anyone who has sat in a busy salon waiting to have their lip done in front of a room, that is usually the part that sells it.

Wax prepared for a facial waxing treatment

Before your appointment

Three things that make the difference between a good appointment and a wasted one.

Let it grow
Wax needs something to grip. A couple of weeks of growth is usually about right, and shaving in between resets the clock rather than helping.
Tell Rai about any skin medication
Some prescription skin treatments make waxing unsuitable, and the consequences are worse than an awkward conversation. Mention it when you book, not on the day.
Leave the heat alone afterwards
Skin is more sensitive for the first day. Rai will run through aftercare, and most of it comes down to avoiding heat, friction and sun for a bit.
Face only
Brows, lip, chin, nostrils, sides and full face. Rai no longer offers body waxing, so legs, underarms and intimate waxing are not available here.

Common questions

How long does the hair need to be?

Long enough for the wax to grip, which is usually around a fortnight of growth. If you have been shaving, give it longer than you think, because stubble is the most common reason an appointment does not go well.

Do you do body waxing?

Not any more. Legs, underarms, bikini and body waxing have all been dropped so Rai can give the permanent makeup work the time it needs. Facial waxing continues as normal.

What is Lycon wax and does it matter?

It is a wax that is applied in smaller sections and grips the hair rather than the skin. It is more expensive to use and most people find it noticeably more comfortable than standard strip wax.

Is there anything that would stop me being waxed?

Some prescription skin medications make waxing unsuitable, and there are a few skin conditions where it is better left. Tell Rai when you book rather than on the day, and she will let you know.
