Be clear about what this is

This is tattooing. Pigment is mixed to match the skin around a depigmented patch and worked into it, so that the patch is less visible. That is the whole of it.

It is not a treatment for vitiligo. It does not slow the condition, stop it spreading or return any of your own pigment. Anything to do with the condition itself sits with your GP or your dermatologist, and it always will.

It also has real limits. It works on small, defined, settled patches rather than across large areas, it takes several sessions, and the colour will not move with your skin through a summer. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something.

Before you get in touch

Worth reading properly, because most of it decides whether this is possible at all.

It has to be stable
Where vitiligo is still active, trauma to the skin can prompt new patches, so tattooing over it is not appropriate. Whether yours has settled is a question for your dermatologist, and Rai will ask what they have said.
Small areas, not large ones
A defined patch on a hand or a face can be made convincing. Broad or scattered areas are far harder, and it is better to hear that now than after a deposit.
It will not tan
The pigment stays the shade it went in at. A match made in winter can read paler than the skin around it by the end of a summer.
Several sessions
Colour is built up gradually and assessed in between, rather than finished in a single appointment.
No photographs on this site
There is no gallery on this page, deliberately. Ask Rai directly if you would like to see examples of her work.
Training
Camouflage work is a separate discipline to brows and lips, and Rai has trained in it specifically. Certificates are on the studio wall.
Patch test
Needed at least 24 hours beforehand, as with any first-time treatment.

Common questions

Is this a treatment for vitiligo?

No, and it is important to be clear about that. This is tattooing. It adds colour to skin that has lost its own, so a patch is less visible. It does not treat the condition, stop it spreading or bring back any of your own pigment. Anything to do with the condition itself belongs with your GP or dermatologist.

Does my vitiligo have to be stable?

Yes. Where vitiligo is still active, any trauma to the skin can prompt new patches, so tattooing over it is not appropriate. How long yours has been settled is a question for your dermatologist, and Rai will ask what they have said before agreeing to anything.

Will it match the rest of my skin?

It is mixed to match your skin as it is on the day, on the areas being worked. The honest limitation is that the pigment will not tan, so a match made in winter can read paler than the skin around it after a summer. Smaller patches are far easier to keep convincing than large ones.

How much can be covered?

Less than most people hope. This works best on small, defined, stable patches rather than across large areas, and it is built up over several sessions. Send a photograph before you plan anything around it and Rai will tell you what she thinks is realistic.
